If....

One can only describe Linsay Anderson's film as odd, and gets wierder as it goes on. Made in 1968 before many Public Schools abolished corporal punishment, it was credited as being part of the abolition campaign. However, the whole story is so exaggerated and the setting seems timeless - it is not clear if it is set pre- or post-war - that it actually achieved very little. Having said that, the caning scene is pretty effective. Again it rams home the message of the arbitariness of the prefectorial system.
